Bartholomew Sholto is a character from the novel The Sign Of The Four (1890). He was the son of Major John Sholto, who brought the priceless Agra Treasure to England from India and the twin sibling of Thaddeus Sholto. Out of guilt over their father's treatment of Arthur Morstan, his brother Thaddeus secretly sent some of the treasure to Morstan's orphaned daughter, Mary. This mysterious gift led her to consult with Sherlock Holmes, kicking off the plot of the novel.
