Benedict Cumberbatch, CBE (full name Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch) is the actor who portrayedSherlock Holmes in the BBC adaptation, Sherlock.

Cumberbatch’s most notable roles besides Sherlock include Major Jamie Stewart in 2011’s War Horse, Khan Noonien Singh in 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, Alan Turing in 2014’s The Imitation Game, Richard III in 2016’s The Hollow Crown series, Doctor Strange in multiple installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Col. Mackenzie in 2019’s 1917, Phil Burbank in 2021’s The Power of the Dog, And Louis Wain in 2021’s The Electrical Life of Louis Wain,

He is also known for doing voice work for roles such as Smaug and the Necromancer in The Hobbit trilogy, Agent Classified in 2014’s Penguins of Madagascar, Shere Khan in 2018’s Mowgli: Legand of the Jungle and the Grinch in 2018’s The Grinch.

  • In the summer of 2011, Danny Boyle created a National Theatre production of 'Frankenstein' in which Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller played the creator and monster and alternately changed nightly. Both actors then went on to play another Victorian creation Sherlock Holmes, both set in the present day, albeit opposite side of the Atlantic.
  • He portrayed the Angel Islington in the BBC's radio play adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel Neverwhere, which co-starred Natalie Dormer and Sir Christopher Lee.
