The Duke of Lomond was a British peer mentioned in "The Adventure of the Three Gables". He was engaged to marry Isadora Klein, the wealthy Brazilian widow of a German sugar baron and a woman old enough to be his mother.

The Duke was apparently oblivious to Isadora's infamy as a fortune-hunter, and her long-running ambition to marry into the nobility. She apparently managed to keep the Duke ignorant of her rather scandalous reputation during their engagement. However, when one of her former lovers, Douglas Maberley, threatened to publish a book revealing her past as revenge for spurning him, Isadora feared that the resulting scandal would cause the Duke's mother to end their engagement.

Fortunately for Isadora, Maberly died in Italy before being able to publish the book, so she hired thieves to steal the manuscript from his luggage when it was returned to his grandmother Mary in England. In spite of Sherlock Holmes's investigation into the theft, she successfully managed to acquire and destroy the document, presumably saving her engagement.
