Lady Hilda Hope was the wife of Trelawney Hope, Secretary for European Affairs for the United Kingdom in 1888. She was youngest daughter of the Duke of Belminster, and was famed for her beauty. When an important piece of inflammatory correspondence disappeared from their home while they were sleeping, her husband and the Prime Minister were forced to consult Sherlock Holmes to locate it.
