Inspector Lestrade refers to the on-screen incarnation of Inspector Lestrade, as portrayed by Colin Jeavons in the ITV Granada Television adaptation.

Portrayal in the series[]

As in most adaptations, Lestrade is an inspector of the London Metropolitan Police, at its headquarters in Scotland Yard. His working relationship with Holmes is portrayed as fairly prickly, but also filled with admiration towards the consulting detective. Lestrade expresses this admiration openly at least once, thanking Holmes on behalf of the police for his help with solving the case: "We're proud of you."

Inspector Lestrade makes several, fairly regular appearances throughout the series, though his overall presence is more downplayed due to the series' fairly strict adherence to Doyle's Canon. He only makes six major appearances in total, not counting the occasional namedrop.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984–1985)[]

The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1986-1988)[]

The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes (1991-1993)[]

He does not make any appearances in the final iteration of the series, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.

  • In this series, Lestrade's surname is used with a more English-sounding pronunciation than the usual French pronunciation, thus rhyming with "trade" and lacking the silent "e" at the end.
  • Though the Canon's Lestrade appears in the Canon story "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box", the Granada version of Lestrade is absent from this story's adaptation, as well as from every other episode of The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.
