Irene Adler (Hunnicutt) refers to the on-screen incarnation of Irene Adler, as portrayed by Gayle Hunnicutt in the ITV Granada Television adaptation.

Portrayal in the Series[]

"She was beautiful, bewitching, clever, daring."

"She's more beautiful than any other woman I've known, more resolute than any man."

This particular version of Irene Adler shares numerous similarities to the canon version, including her interactions with Holmes and Watson. However, there were also differences: she was portrayed as being an expert pistol shooter, an accomplished horsewoman, and had "the voice of an Angel".

During the epilogue of the episode, Doctor Watson's voice-over hints at Holmes and Adler having a degree of mutual admiration for each other, though he admits the true nature of Holmes' feelings remains ambiguous. As in the conclusion of the original story, he notes that Adler will probably always remain in Holmes' mind as "The Woman" that impressed him with her charm, her strength, and especially her intellect (which enabled her to outwit him).

Appearances[]

Irene Adler appeared in the episode "A Scandal in Bohemia" of the Granada-produced ITV series of Sherlock Holmes. This was the very first episode of the series, serving as its premiere when it first began airing in 1984. As is the case with her literary counterpart, this version of Adler doesn't appear outside of A Scandal in Bohemia, but was occasionally mentioned in later stories.
