Peter Wyngarde (23 August 1927 - 15 January 2018) was a British actor. He portrayed Baron Grüner in the episode The Illustrious Client of BBC's 1960s Sherlock Holmes series and Langdale Pike in the 1994 episode The Three Gables of the Granada Television series of Sherlock Holmes.

Personal life and career[]

The details of Wyngarde's early life are often very sketchy. His exact date of birth was only determined after his death in 2018. His birth name was Cyril Louis Goldbert.

Wyngarde's best known television roles include the series The Adventures of Ben Gunn, Rupert of Hentzau, Department S and Jason King. He also played Sidney Carton in a 1957 miniseries adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities, a version of Number Two in The Prisoner, various roles in the anthology programmes BBC Sunday-Night Theatre and ITV Play of the Week, and had guest roles in The Avengers and The Saint. His filmography includes Alexander the Great (1956), The Siege of Sidney Street, The Innocents (1961), Night of the Eagle, Himmel, Scheich und Wolkenbruch, Flash Gordon, Tank Malling.

After the mid 1990s, Wyngarde largely discontinued acting in television and film productions. In fact, his role as Langdale Pike was one of his last major ones. He still did occasional voiceover work for British television documentaries.
