Philip Green was a suspect in "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax". He was a former suitor of Lady Frances', who was rejected because of his course manners. After making a fortune in South Africa he returned to Europe to resume pursuing Lady Frances around the continent in an attempt to woo her. He managed to track her to a hotel in Lausanne, where he attempted to talk to her. However, his wild, "savage" appearance, alarming behaviour, and quick temper frightened her, and she left quickly to get away from him, leaving no forwarding information. When Sherlock Holmes sent Dr Watson to investigate Lady Frances' disappearance, Green's threatening behavior made him the principal suspect. Watson learns that Green followed Lady Frances from Switzerland to Baden, and finally encounters him in Montpellier stalking Miss Marie Devine, Lady Frances' former maid.

  • Green's father is mentioned to have been a famous admiral of the same name, who commanded the British fleet in the Sea of Azov during the Crimean War.
