The first series of the Soviet television movies, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, it consisted of two movies, Acquaintance (based on parts of A Study in Scarlet and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band") and Bloody Inscription (based on A Study in Scarlet).

Plot[]

In Acquaintance, Dr. Watson is introduced to Mr. Sherlock Holmes by his friend Stamford. Due to a series of misunderstandings and Holmes being overly mysterious, he is lead to believe that Holmes is a master criminal. The misunderstanding is soon cleared up, however. Then Holmes and Watson get a case from Helen Stoner, who fears that she might die in the same way her sister, Julia, did. Holmes and Watson go to her family home, and Holmes is able to deduce that her stepfather had trained a venomous snake to go down her bell-pull. In a twist of fate, the snake is frightened and her stepfather becomes its victim.

In Bloody Inscription Holmes and Watson are called by Inspectors Gregson and Lestrade to investigate the murder of an American named Enoch Drebber, who was found dead with the word "Revenge" painted in blood on the wall. Holmes creates a plan to catch the murderer using a wedding ring dropped at the scene, but is unsuccessful. After Drebber's secretary Joseph Stangerson is also found dead, this time stabbed, Holmes is able to deduce the murderer's plans from the contents of a pillbox found at the scene. He then fakes a heart attack on the street in front of the cab he told his Baker Street Irregulars to get. The murderer, Jefferson Hope, is arrested, after which he tells them how Drebber and Stangerson killed his fiancée and future father-in-law.
