Shinwell Johnson is an ex-convict and former patient of Joan Watson's whose life she saved when she was a surgeon.
Shinwell is a gang member turned informant, whom Sherlock and Joan are training with the skills he'll need to successfully do this. He occasionally provides information for Sherlock and Joan that helps them with a case.
Many years ago Shinwell was tricked into murdering his best friend Jameel. Shinwell was informed that Jameel was a traitor to SBK; the truth was that Jameel had slept with the ex girlfriend of a rival gang leader, and one of the terms of a peace deal was Jameel's execution. Shinwell discovered the truth while in prison, and realized that the organization that he had devoted his life to only saw him and his fellows as disposable. From there Shinwell became determined to seek revenge.
