"We are the biggest Sherlock Holmes geeks in the world. This has become such an enormous international hit, it's sort of preposterous, it's like our vanity project, it's our hobby. And yet everybody has joined in!"
―Steven talking about himself and Mark Gatiss[1]

Steven Moffat is a television writer and producer. He is one of the co-creators of Sherlock, with Mark Gatiss.

Moffat read the Sherlock Holmes stories as a child and fell in love with them, describing himself and Mark Gatiss as the "biggest Sherlock Holmes geeks in the world". He says the stories are "the biggest hit in fiction" and that they are so enduring because of, "the characters who are perfect, they are brilliant."[1]

Moffat's first television work was the fondly-remembered teen drama series Press Gang, which was unusual, and sometimes controversial, for its willingness to touch on sensitive, real-life issues for young viewers, in contrast to typical children's TV.[2] His first sitcom, Joking Apart, was inspired by the breakdown of his first marriage;[3] conversely, his later sitcom Coupling was based upon the development of his relationship with television producer Sue Vertue, whom he married in 1997.[4] In between the two relationship-centred shows, he wrote Chalk, a sitcom set in a comprehensive school and inspired by his own experience as an English teacher.[3] He is best known in the present day as the head writer of the BBC's long running science fiction series Doctor Who, although he has stepped down from that role.[5]

  • Perhaps due to Steven being the head writer of Doctor Who, many actors in Sherlock have appeared in Doctor Who. Mark Gatiss himself has also contributed to Doctor Who since its revival in 2005, and also had a starring role in series 3.
