Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson flee to Switzerland to escape from Professor James Moriarty, ending up in the village of Meiringen in the Alps. Baron Adelbert Gruner's first wife died in an apparent accident in the Splügen Pass, located in the Alps on the border between Switzerland and Italy.
