Ted Baldwin is an antagonist in The Valley of Fear. He is a prominent member of a murderous gang known as the 'Scowrers' in Vermissa Valley. He and his fellow Freemen lodge-member Jack McMurdo, dislike each other immediately due to their competition for the affection of Ettie Shafter and McMurdo's vicious tongue. When the gang is exposed by McMurdo (in actuality Pinkerton detective Birdy Edwards), Baldwin is given a ten-year prison sentence. Following his release, he chases Edwards across America and over to England. He eventually tracks Edwards (now living in Sussex under the alias John Douglas) to his estate at Birlstone. He breaks into Birlstone House armed with an American-made shotgun, and attempts to kill Douglas for revenge. During a struggle with Douglas, one of them accidentally presses the weapon's trigger, with Baldwin being fatally shot directly in the head. His body, disfigured beyond recognition from the blast, is dressed as Douglas in an effort to fool the public into believing it was Douglas himself.
