The Amazing Mycroft Mysteries was a series of three detective novels written by British born American science fiction author Gerald Heard and published by Cassell & Co. in the UK and Vanguard Press in the US. The novels feature a reclusive beekeeper in the English countryside who goes by the name of Mycroft; clearly intended to be a retired Sherlock Holmes, but the books were written before the Doyle estate gave permission for other writers to use the name.

Novels[]

  • A Taste for Honey (1941)
  • Reply Paid (1942)
  • The Notched Hairpin (1949)

Adaptations[]

A Taste for Honey was adapted for The Elgin TV Hour in 1955 as "Sting of Death," with horror legend Boris Karloff as Mr. Mycroft.

A Taste for Honey was loosely adapted into a 1967 British horror film, The Deadly Bees, directed by Freddie Francis. Robert Bloch, who admired the novel, kept closely to it in his original screenplay; however, before production began, the screenplay was heavily rewritten by Anthony Marriott, removing most connections with the book
