The Dynamics of an Asteroid

The Dynamics of an Asteroid depicted in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

The Dynamics of an Asteroid is a book written by Professor James Moriarty, mentioned in The Valley of Fear. The work gained Moriarty particular celebrity; as Sherlock Holmes described it, the treatise "ascends to such rarefied heights of pure mathematics that it is said that there was no man in the scientific press capable of criticizing it." While no further details of its contents are mentioned, it has appeared in numerous adaptations.

Appearances in adaptations[]

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows[]

Moriarty uses a lecture tour in continental Europe as a smokescreen to cover up his plans to start a world war. In Paris, he gives Sebastian Moran the orders to kill Alfred Meinhard while signing copies of this book after a lecture at the Hôtel de Ville.

A Study in Emerald[]

At the end of this alternate-universe short story by Neil Gaiman, the main antagonist, alias "Sherry Vernet", leaves a confession for the story's unnamed detective after escaping. It mentions that the two had corresponded two years ago on this treatise. This is a key clue that the unnamed detective is not, in fact, Sherlock Holmes, but Moriarty.
