I consider her the ideal woman and the only woman for Sherlock Holmes... regardless of the actress or interpretetation...I mean in the books, the movie, and the tv show she is THE Woman
I think she is an amazing character, If we forget the last 10-15 minutes she is "The Dominarix who brought a nation to it's knees"
She beat sherlock, the only person who could. She is strong and resourcefull, confident and smart. As the exact opposite of sherlock she contrasts with him briliantly.
However she wants control constantly and does that both in her work and using her work to gain information. This may be because she shows signs of a hard childhood and having anxiety in the past. She wants control and frankly she gets it.
Irene is a head-strong character, she is smart and confident and i love her for it.
She one of my favorite characters of the show.
I think that, at least in BBC's interpretation of it, she is the only person who could be Sherlock's intellectual equal while also being a romantic interest. Whereas Moriarty was Sherlock's opposite (as far as personality goes), she was very similar to him, always wanting control of the situation (Sherlock wanted control of the situation, too, just never in the same way as Irene Adler did).
And even though we can argue that their romance might be lacking in BBC's adaptation, I would still go so far as to say that she loved him, and he loved her, in their own ways. Even though they both saw the other as part of the game they were playing, I still think they saw each other as potential romantic interests, especially in Irene. When Sherlock took her pulse and saw that she was attracted to him, he was right, but it wasn't just that she was fascinated in him as part of the game. When she was kidnapped and sentenced to death in the Middle East, her last action (or so she thought) was to say goodbye to Sherlock via text. As for Sherlock, well, he wouldn't risk his life rescuing somebody he didn't care about.
