The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was an island nation in Western Europe, separated from the mainland by the English Channel. It was composed of four separate countries: England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. It was ruled over by its monarch, who for sixty-three years was Queen Victoria.

The United Kingdom was known for its impressive navy, and grew wealthy by controlling trade in Europe. Its capital, London, was known as the central hub of global banking and commerce, with goods and people from all corners of the world flowing into the city. The British held an extensive colonial empire with possessions on all habitable continents, most notably India in Asia, Australia in the Pacific and South Africa in Africa.
